Water scarcity in the West is the natural resource issue of our generation. Below is a list of water resources to help you better understand the complexities of water rights and use in Colorado. Thank you to Paul Fanning, who worked for Pueblo Board of Water Works for more than twenty years, for curating this list of water resources in the Lower Arkansas Valley and the State of Colorado.

WATER EDUCATION

Arkansas Basin Roundtable - Public Education, Participation and Outreach (PEPO)

The Roundtable PEPO workgroup strives to provide education and outreach on behalf of all water use categories in the Arkansas Basin, including municipal supply, irrigated agriculture, recreation, and the environment. 

Arkansas River Basin Water Forum

To know water is to better understand our state. Since 1995, the Arkansas River Basin Water Forum has provided a friendly, constructive medium where individuals and organizations are able to explain their views and engage in open dialogue with other water users.

Colorado Water Plan

The Colorado Water Plan provides a framework for helping Colorado meet its water challenges through collaborative action around water development and water conservation. The Water Plan is a grassroots effort and relies on the Colorado water community to identify and implement basin-specific and/or statewide water projects that provide multiple benefits to the state's diverse water users. The Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) creates and manages the Water Plan framework, and supports the state's water community with funding and technical resources to implement programs and projects.

Arkansas River Basin Water Conservancy District’s

Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District

Founded in 1979 by a group of visionary water users and leaders for the purpose of protecting and securing water in the Upper Arkansas Valley. 

Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy District

Formed in 2002 by the voters of Pueblo, Crowley, Otero, Bent, and Prowers Counties, the Lower Arkansas Valley Water Conservancy mission is to protect water resources today and for future generations.  

Southeastern Colorado Water Conservancy District

The managing entity for the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project (FryArk), which is a transmountain diversion that supplies southeastern Colorado with improved supplemental water supply for irrigation, municipal and industrial uses, hydroelectric power generation, and recreational opportunities.
