In a stirring tribute to the essence of Western spirit and tenaciousness, the National Western Stock Show recently bestowed the esteemed Citizen of the West award upon General Ralph E. “Ed” Eberhart. This accolade is a testament to his unwavering commitment to our country, embodying the very ideals of Western lifestyle, agricultural heritage, and pioneering traditions. Palmer applauds this announcement and is grateful for the wealth of leadership experience General Eberhart brings to our Board of Trustees.

For the first time in two decades, the Citizen of the West award goes to a resident of Colorado Springs. The last Colorado Springs resident to receive the award was William J. Hybl, Chairman of El Pomar Foundation, and father of Palmer Trustee William “BJ” Hybl, Jr.

General Eberhart’s journey is woven with valor and dedication. A distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, he gained respect through his 36-year military service, marked by significant milestones. Notably, he steered the U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command during a pivotal era after the September 11 attacks, fortifying homeland defense and ushering in measures to safeguard against future threats.

His illustrious career boasts numerous accolades, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Sacred Treasure Japan (presented by the Emperor of Japan), among others. General Eberhart’s excellence extended beyond the military realm, as he served on the boards of prominent companies and nonprofits, leaving an indelible mark.

Yet, General Eberhart’s legacy is not just in his achievements; it’s also in his dedication to community service. His contributions as President of the Armed Forces Benefit Association and his role in various foundations showcase a man deeply committed to making a difference.

On January 8, 2024, General Ralph E. “Ed” Eberhart will stand as the 45th Citizen of the West, an embodiment of courage, integrity, and pioneering spirit. We are thrilled to honor this remarkable individual whose life story echoes the values of Palmer Land Conservancy. General Eberhart and his wife Karen stand as beacons of inspiration, reminding us all of the profound impact one person can have on their nation and community.
