Hybl Takes the Helm: Honoring Geary's Impact and Welcoming New Leadership

Leadership transitions mark pivotal moments—opportunities to honor dedicated service while embracing fresh vision. At Palmer Land Conservancy, we’re proud to celebrate John Geary's remarkable tenure and welcome BJ Hybl as our new board chair.

Gratitude for John Geary's Leadership

John Geary's chairmanship strengthened Palmer's capacity to accelerate conservation impact across southern Colorado. Under his guidance, Palmer advanced critical projects, including the transformative purchase of the Bessemer Farm—a cornerstone in our efforts to protect prime agricultural land in Pueblo County.

John's commitment to conservation runs deep in his family. As owner and president of GLM Development Co., he demonstrates sustainable land and timber management practices. But perhaps most meaningful is how he follows in the footsteps of his uncle, Stu Dodge, Palmer's first executive director. Stu's legendary dedication—advancing conservation for an annual salary of $1—helped guide the legacy conservation work that defines the Pikes Peak region today. John embodies that same spirit of service.

We're grateful John continues as a trustee, ensuring his expertise and passion remain woven into Palmer's work.

Introducing BJ Hybl: A Lifetime Connected to This Land

BJ Hybl extends Palmer's board chair role as a leader with a lifetime of connection to the landscapes we protect.

Growing up in Colorado Springs, BJ benefited from the abundant parks and open spaces that shaped his conservation ethic. Those experiences didn't just create memories—they forged a commitment to protecting what made them possible.

For BJ, conservation is about a deep connection with the land. It's Mount Cutler Trail, where he's hiked since childhood. "I find something new to enjoy every hike," he shares. Picture the loop trail surrounded by tall pines and striking granite and sandstone outcroppings. At the summit, panoramic views unfold—Colorado Springs, the Broadmoor Hotel, Garden of the Gods stretching below. This lifelong connection to one trail demonstrates the deep roots and dedication BJ brings to Palmer's leadership.

His approach to staying grounded is simple: hiking. "I find hiking to be the best way to immerse yourself in natural landscapes, which fosters a sense of grounding," BJ explains. This practice keeps him connected to what Palmer works to protect.

BJ served in the United States Air Force and the United States Air Force Reserve, serving as their Space Operations Captain for nine years. Since his time in the Air Force, BJ worked with The Garden City Company in Kansas, where he was involved in strategic planning for over 28,000 acres of agricultural land. Currently, BJ is the President and COO of Griffis/Blessing, Inc.

BJ’s perfect Colorado Saturday

It starts with coffee and an apple empanada at La Concha Bakery, followed by a hike at North Cheyenne Cañon Park, and ends with lasagna at Paravicini's Italian Bistro. It's a day that celebrates local businesses, outdoor recreation, and community—all Palmer values.

Looking Forward Together

BJ's leadership continues the momentum from his predecessor to advance conservation in Colorado—which is more urgent than ever before. His personal connection to Colorado Springs, combined with his professional expertise, positions him to guide Palmer through the challenges ahead—protecting the places that shaped him for future generations who deserve the same opportunities to connect with this remarkable landscape.

We're delighted about BJ's chairmanship and the vision he brings. His story reminds us that the most effective conservation leaders are those who remain dedicated to protecting the Colorado we all love.

Join us in welcoming BJ Hybl as Palmer's board chair. Together, we'll continue protecting the land and water that unite us all—ensuring the Colorado you love today is here forever.
